Know your target audience and gain more traction in business

Knowing your target audience is very important to the success of  your business.

One of the most important things I learnt while setting up my blog was that, “I could not chase everybody, and expect to catch any body.”

I understood that target audience was very important, if I was ever going to succeed.

So, the first thing I did before setting up my blog was to define what I wanted to do.

“ What am I coming into the  online business world to do?”  I asked myself.

It was a very difficult question to answer.

I pondered over it for days and nights. I even wrote down some things that I wanted to do; but I ended up canceling them all. Weeks and months went by, until eventually,  it came strongly to me that I wanted to help those that are like me.

These are the  people that want to make money from home. People that believe that they can build successful online businesses, and that there is no limit to the amount of money they can make from home.

They crave to have full control of their time; no hassles of commuting to work everyday; no boss to give them a ceiling; and above all, live the kind of life they wanted.

There was no doubt in my mind that I had gotten the hammer that I needed to hit the nail on the head.

If you have started your online business or blog and have not yet defined your target audience, in my opinion, you are like a person that jumped into the deep sea searching for something.

“Searching for what?” You won’t be able to tell any body. Even if anyone comes to help you, you will not be able to tell them what you are looking for, because you don’t know.

Defining your target audience should be the first step in your business development.

Now, who is your target audience?

Your target audience is that person that is most likely to connect with your business or service and eventually become a paying customer.

How do you know them?

The first thing to consider when you want to know your target audience is your niche. This is where you have your strength; this is where you want to operate from – I told you mine above. When you are able to define that, you begin to get a glimpse or a little picture of the kind of people that  will need the kind of service you have to offer.

By way of example, If the kind of service you have to offer is cloth making, you may want to ask yourself,

“what kind of clothes do I know how to make?”

You may tell yourself,  “I know how to make men’s clothes.”

At this point, you know for sure, your target audience is men and not women.

Taking it further, you may also ask yourself, “what kind of men’s clothes do I want to make,  or know how to make.”

Is it casual men’s cloth or corporate men’s cloth?”

If it’s casual, then you know the audience you are looking for are the ones that wear casuals.

Defining your target audience is  a big stepping stone to making sales and success in business.

“Assemble your target audience profile using demographic factors. In other words, the basic background of  the audience you intend to aim at.This helps you know how to communicate with them.”

From here on, you need to create a good profile of the person you want to sell to using demographic factors. Start with the gender. Is it a man or a woman?

Next, where is this person located?

Are they located in the united states, Asia, Africa, schools, clubs?

You have to be able to find that out.

Thereafter, you also have to find out the age range of  the people that you are looking for.

In addition, seek to know their educational level, income level, and marital status.

When you are able to put all these together, then you would have succeeded in sorting out the profile of your audience according to demographic factors.

Having done all of the above, you should at this point have a vivid picture of your target audience

Now, lets see the picture of the audience for casual clothes above.

Your business will be catering to men of age range 22  – 60,  that need casual clothes, live in the united states, degree holders, that earn middle level income.

Presumably, you should have built a good picture of the kind of person that will be buying your product or service. And you are able to fix a price range.

Now that you have good picture of your target audience, how do you connect with them?

When you know all the above, you are on your way to connecting with the right customer for your business.

To connect with your target audience you have to know where they hang out?

Where can you find them?

Look  for the influencers in your niche. Google has made it very easy for us. Go to google and put in the keyword of your business, You find the influencers on the first page.

Go to their sites, and find out more about your target audience there. Find out what makes them tick; how these influencers relate with this audience, and where they meet. Do whatever it’s needful and ethical to locate them and identify with them. If you identify with what they identify with, you will be able to get them.

For example, if you know that they like a particular influencer, you have to learn how to get to that influencer. Perhaps, offer to guest post for the influencer and begin commenting on the influencer’s blog.

Just be there, make yourself known. They will identify with you; they will know you are there.

Another way to find them is by checking newspapers, forums, and social media.

In which social media can you find and connect with your target audience?

Statistics shows that  highly educated and high income users tend to adopt linkedin, women are skewed more to pinterest, while teenagers use instagram more.

Assuming, your target audience use facebook and not twitter, you will be wasting your time and resources trying to connect with them on twitter.

If your target audience are female, then you will definitely be looking at  pinterest more to connect with your target audience.

Target audience is very, very important to your business, influencers can help you. Knowing where they hang can help you identify with them.

Also understanding what you want to go into can help you to know them. You have to have a very clear focus of your mission and vision to be able to identify and connect with your target audience.

There is no need wasting your time starting a business or blog and not knowing your target audience.

Perhaps you’ve being in business for a long time now, and you discovered that your business is not gaining traction – you’re not having the kind of sale you desire. This may be the time to look more closely at the type of audience you’re pursuing. Are they the target audience for your business? I would recommend looking into this to improve your business.
